OK, after yesterdays unscheduled update, things have got back on track again
today with the long overdue reopening of the Information Centre. Regular
visitors will notice it's a significantly trimmed down version of what was
present on the original site, and there's a very good reason for that...
Most people visiting this site are interested in the audio-visual material
on offer, so it makes sense for me to concentrate my efforts on maintaining
and updating these areas of the new site. In addition, much of the
information present on the original site is out of date, and with no way of
obtaining the correct information it makes more sense to simply remove the
old material. Remember, it's all still available via the old site pages if
you want to refer back to it, it just won't be made available from this new
version of the site.
However, it's not just a case of copying stuff across from the old site and
chopping out the old bits - I've taken the opportunity to update the Band
Member pages where possible, and I've added some more lyrics. But perhaps
most importantly, it now means that the information section is back in
business, which will make it easier to add more new information as and when
it appears...
And so, with that, the Golden Jubilee update is complete. I don't think I've
put in as much work on the site in a single period for a long long time, and
I think now I remember why I stopped doing it! It's all been worth it though,
because right now the site is looking more or less how I imagined it to look
way back when I first had the idea of redoing the look and layout. Sure,
there's still bits here and there to finish off, and there's ALWAYS work to
be done keeping the site updated, but essentially the rebuilding work is done.
Not surprisingly, this makes me rather happy - this site is kinda like my
baby, it's been a huge part of my life for the last 6 years and I've watched
it grow from its single-page beginnings into the monster it is today. And
whilst I'm not a perfectionist, I'm not that far off it, so it hasn't been
all that comfortable seeing the site in a state of semi-completion these
last few months. But now I can sit back and relax for a bit, knowing that
pretty much any further work I do on the site will be to add new features
rather than simply redoing the original material. I can't wait!
Once again, big thanks to everyone for being patient and letting me get on
with the redesign without filling up my mailbox with "oi Chris, when's the
site gonna be finished?!?" mails. Indeed, all the mail I've had has been
positive messages of support, both for the way the site is going and also
in reference to the personal issues I mentioned back in earlier Notes. A
website is nothing without visitors, and I'm lucky to have some of the
nicest people on the planet making this a regular stopping off point on their
journeys round the web.
