No, this isn't a discussion about a newly discovered Star Trek episode... It's
a little reminder about the need to maintain up-to-date image viewing/editing
utilities on your system.
In the beginning there was the JPEG format. And there was much rejoicing, as
people discovered the delights of 24bit images packed into a smaller size file
than seemed possible. But then came Progressive JPEG. And though there was
more rejoicing as we discovered even better compression rates, there was also
much tearing out of hair as people started complaining they "couldn't load the
JPEGs...".
What am I getting at... simple. Some of the JPEGs on this site are Progressive
JPEGs. And therefore you will need to use Progressive JPEG compatible software
in order to see them. Older software with JPEG support is NOT necessarily
compatible - make sure the documentation specifically mentions Progressive
JPEG support. If in doubt, upgrade... Even if you aren't in doubt, upgrade
anyway, because if you are using software that old, it's about time you changed
it :-)
So, if you're getting errors every time you try viewing one of the JPEGs on this
site, don't blame me, your modem or your ISP. Blame your software.
