Tech Notes

(1st October 2001)

This site is produced using a combination of Amiga and PC systems. All HTML and JavaScript coding, and most graphics editing, is done on the Amiga. Image scanning, video capture/editing, audio capture/ encoding, and some graphics work, is handled by the PC. The only "HTML Authoring Tool" I use is a plain ASCII text editor...

More specifically:
On the Amiga...

plus a handful of custom ARexx and HSPascal utilities

...and the PC

The systems are linked via 10/100MBps ethernet (no more sneakernet!), short-term backups are held on Iomega Zip disks with permanent archives stored on CD-R.

Pages are tested with a variety of browsers on a variety of systems - as much as is possible given the requirements of specific pages, this site is designed to be viewable on any browser, regardless of display abilities. Just because the majority of visitors to this site are using Netscape or Internet Explorer doesn't mean I should ignore the smaller numbers of people using browsers without all the functionality of the big two. No JavaScript? No problem. No images? Follow the ALT tags to all the text-based content. No browser? Hmm, that could be a problem ;-)
I get annoyed when sites proudly announce "Best viewed with Netscape/Internet Explorer", "Make sure your browser window is 800*600", "You need Java support to proceed" etc. etc., so I have no intention of perpetuating this idiotic transformation of the web into something that can only be used with a narrow range of hardware and software combinations. That isn't what the web is about, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to think again...
