Oi Mel! Tell us what it's like to be a superstar!
Kerry: Alright Mel, sit yourself down, here's our quezzies for yer...
Mel: (Giggling) Oooh, I'm scared.
Liz: Right, what advice would you give us on pop stardom?
Mel: Well probably the best thing I could say is to follow your instincts
and do what you want to do. You need to listen to your manager and record
company because...
Natasha: ...they give you your money!
Mel: Ha ha ha! Yeah, and they know what they're doing. But, my point is
that at the end of the day if they're working you into the ground, then
you have to stick up for yourself. It doesn't mean you're not going to be
successful if you cut a couple of telly appearances for the sake of your
sanity and your health.
Kerry: That's the best thing I've heard! Oi! (Shouting to the Kitten's
manager sitting in the corner) listen to this manager man!
Mel: Y'see, when the Spice Girls first started out we worked like dogs,
and because we were really successful, they kept working us so hard. We
nearly died! We were all ill from over work! So I'd say look after
yourselves! Stick together and don't let anyone else get in between you.
Kerry: I say we just sack Martin! (Pointing at manager)
Mel: Do you want me to manage you? Ronan manages Westlife, so I could
manage you three - ha ha ha ha!
Liz: Cool, we'd have loads of parties!
Mel: (Looking slightly worried) Erm, I'm only joking!
Natasha: Back to the questions girls. What are the best things about
being famous Mel?
Mel: Well I don't know about you lot but I always wanted to be famous...
(Liz and Natasha start talking about their hair)
Mel: Are you listening or what? You're interviewing a Spice Girl here!
(The girls collapse in giggles) Anyway, the best bits are doing
programmes like Live & Kicking, meeting other bands, just doing the
things you'd dreamed of doing for years. It's all brilliant!
Liz: But what are the downsides?
Mel: Well loads of famous people moan about being famous but...
Kerry: I know they're always moaning about being tired...
Mel: Yeah, but hang on, in a couple of years time, you may be having a
little moan. I mean, it is hard work - papers write horrible stuff
about you, people follow you and old friends sell stories to the
papers about you.
Kerry: Does it upset you when you read horrible things about yourself
in the papers?
Mel: Yeah, of course, but I always try to remember that the person who's
writing horrible stuff doesn't know me. And there'll always be people
who criticise you. I don't like everyone so I can't expect everyone to
like me...
Liz: Look at your new tattoo Mel! Did it hurt?
Mel: (Mel proudly shows off the huge tattoo on her calf) I only had it
done last week, I had to be careful shaving me legs this morning. I just
had to skim over it! It is a bit sore to tell the truth!
Kerry?: Is it scary singing solo?
Mel: It was when I first went on stage, but the thing is I always get
nervous anyway, even in the Spice Girls - all the other girls laugh at me
for being nervous.
Kerry: How hard is it to have a relationship when you're so much in the
public eye?
Mel: I think it's hard to have a relationship whether you're famous or
not...
Natasha: Oooh yeah, 'cause we're not even famous yet and it's hard for
us...
Merry: So Mel, have you got a boyfriend now?
Mel: Nah, it's just life innit? It's hard for everyone to keep a
relationship going.
Natasha: It is hard but I've got a boyfriend and I wanna keep hold of my
relationship.
Mel: Well we'll see about that! Ha ha ha!
Liz: Do you find it hard to go out and do dead normal stuff?
Kerry: Yeah, and do you wear a disguise?
Mel: I think if you wear a baseball cap and everything that it draws
attention to you even more. I just put me head down and walk fast.
Natasha: I'd have to wear one of those fake moustaches!
Mel: No one's interested in me anyway.
Kerry: As if! You're always in the paper!
Natasha: How do you get your beauty sleep when you're on a tour bus all
the time?
Mel: Are you mad? We don't have a tour bus, we have a private jet! Ha
ha ha ha ha!
