The Man Behind This.
Well if you are reading this, it means that my good friend, Chris, who runs this
site, thinks that this article is half decent, cheers Chris. This is the first
time I have ever written an article to go on the internet, for the whole world
to see - so please bear with me.
You probably don't what to know about me at all, but I am going to tell you
anyway. I'm a 16 year old student in Croydon, London, and I am a die hard
Crystal Palace football supporter - Eagles !!!
As well as being a Crystal Palace supporter, I'm a big fan of most Indie music.
If there is an album out and it involves a British band - I've got it, Oasis,
Ocean Colour Scene, Manic Street Preachers, Space, Blur etc.
Mel C - The Sporty One.
I remember the first day I saw Spice Girls, it was on a Sunday morning
children's programme on BBC 2. That week they were the guests and they sang
Wannabe. I had never heard of them before and when I heard Wannabe, I
thought, good song, but they'll just be your usual one hit wonder - How wrong I
was. On this show they interviewed just one of the girls. Her name was Mel C
and I never got her out of my mind from that day onwards.
I suppose what made her stand out from all the others was her style of clothes
and her down to earth attitude. I can't stand a woman who thinks she is better
than everybody else and you've got to look at her because she is so great. I
think everybody knows what I mean, you meet these type of girls in every walk
of life. We definitely have a few of them at our school, always combing their
hair and looking at themselves in the mirror. They may seem at first to be
physically attractive but when they open their mouth they start to get uglier
and the more they speak the uglier they get.
With Mel I don't see her as one of these girls and that is what I find very
attractive about her.
Well after that they appeared on Top Of The Pops, and the whole of the country
went Spice Girl crazy. They were on everything including the Richard and Judy
Show (This Morning) - wow. Then came they other hits, Say You'll Be There and
2 Become 1 (Christmas No1).
It definitely looks as if the Spice Girls are here to stay longer than what we
thought. What made me go absolutely crazy about Mel C was the video to Say
You'll Be There, as she looked absolutely stunning.
What gets up my nose though is the treatment she gets from the media. She is
supposedly the least popular of the five and if you think she is your favourite,
you have got something wrong with you. What I want to know is, is there some
kind of written law that says certain women are more attractive then others. I
think not. We are all different in many ways and that is what makes the world
turn round. Let's say that we were all exactly the same and liked exactly the
same things, life would be boring. Just imagine you were sitting down and
someone said I think Oasis are the best band, then someone says I think so too
and then another person says exactly the same, wouldn't that be extremely
boring. Difference of opinion makes the life we live interesting.
In most of the polls Mel C finishes a miserable 4th or 5th. The lowest
percentage of the votes I have ever seen her get is 2% (that is low), meaning
Geri and Emma ran away with it. I know that Emma may be extremely attractive to
some men out there, but for me I would take Mel any day of the week. Lately
though I have noticed that Mel is getting more popular all of the time and in
the U.S.A and Spain she is supposedly very popular. I would also like to add
that in a recent survey in the FHM magazine about the world's hundred most
desired women, Mel C came 56th, which doesn't sound that impressive at first but
considering that this is out of all the women in the world I think 56th is quite
reasonable (well it should be higher in my opinion but only some of us have good
taste). It just goes to show that Mel is getting more popular all of the time.
So why is Mel C my favourite instead of going along with the trend and picking
Geri or Emma. It is definitely not because I pity her or because I just try
to be different from everybody else. So what is it about her that attracts me
to her?
Along with Chris I think her hair is fantastic, I don't care whether it's tied
up or let down loose. It still looks fabulous, even her new style which is her
hair being tightly plaited down the side of the head. From a distance it looks
as if Mel B and her had a fight with a pair of scissors - up close it is again
very good.
Mel has these very natural good looks and does not need to cake her face up in
makeup to make herself look attractive. Mel says that her nickname is Holland
because it is flat, like her - that is not nice is it. I love Mel`s slim-line
figure, she keeps herself in such great shape. On a breakfast show a 'style
specialist' said that Mel C was looking a bit thin and she should make sure that
she eats more. Well I saw her on Top of the Pops (30/5/97) the day after this
so called style specialist said this and she looked great, I don't call it being
too thin, I call it keeping in shape and maybe this style expert should stop
bringing up all this rubbish just so she can earn a quick buck.
She has by far the most wickedest sense of humour and only Mel B in the group
can come anywhere near her. It could be her brilliant Celtic chain tattoo or
the cute little nose stud (which by the way makes my mum feel sick) but I like
it. Is it the northern accent? I think the northern accent is great and when
I go on holiday I meet quite a lot of Northerners and find their sense of humour
very funny, and that's exactly the same with Mel. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy
being a Cockney diamond geezer, but if you want a good laugh, hang about with a
Northerner.
But most of all it has to be Mel's personality and it is the personality for me
that is the number one thing that makes a women truly beautiful.
The treatment she gets in the media gets on my nerves. It's not that she gets
slagged off in the press (although this does happen), it's also that she gets
ignored by the press. Any Spice Girl article we read about is either about Geri
or Emma and there is hardly anything about Mel that we don't know about her
already.
An example of a non mention in the press is the story in a daily tabloid. There
were pictures of the girls on a boat in Acapulco. I have to say again that Mel
looked stunning - but I think Mel would look fabulous in a bin bag, but I don't
want Mel to take this thought too seriously. I carried on and read the story
and in one paragraph it said "Baby Emma looked stunning in a cheeky pink bikini.
Ginger Geri left little to the imagination in a skimpy two-piece. And Scary
Mel B cast off all inhibitions by going topless." So where was the mention of
Mel C I hear you ask and that is what I was asking myself at the time as well.
It so happens that there was no mention of Mel in the whole article - Why?
I suppose the journalist would say that he forgot to mention her, but come on I
find that a bit hard to believe. I`ll give him the benefit of the doubt and do
the job that he was supposed to have done. So concluding on from the paragraph
above. "Sporty Mel C looking far better than the other four girls, was wearing
a delightful red two-piece showing off her tremendous figure" (I think that
should do quite nicely).
Mel does not always get ignored in the press, sometimes she does get a mention,
normally it's just a couple of lines. But when I was looking in the papers
about a month ago (15/5/97), on page three they had a whole page - yes a whole
page with a picture of Mel, it was taken from the Say You'll Be There video.
I thought at last she is getting the good press that she deserves and it is
about time. Then I read the headline that went with the picture, it said
"HURTY SPICE - Sporty Spice Girl Mel C got the blame yesterday after a boy
was booted in the goolies." I could not believe what I was reading at first,
but I carried on reading and I discovered that it wasn't Mel C who had done this
but a girl who was imitating Mel C's karate kick dance routine.
Wait a minute, I do remember Mel C kicks thin air in her dance routine, but not
a boy's sacred parts. I found that the mother obviously hold Mel in high regard
as she said this "In particular I am concerned about Sporty Spice, I don't like
her attitude that we're better than boy's and we'll show them." Sorry I do not
think I am hearing you right, this is not the attitude I seem to get from Mel,
all she is saying is that Girls should have as much rights as boys and I agree.
I suppose though if someone offers you a lot of money to say this cock and bull,
most people would say the same thing. To be quite honest with you I don't think
Mel is bothered by the lack of press she gets, as it means she not followed
around the place by reporters as much as the others.
Daniel
P.S. If you know Mel say hi from me because I can't see her coming down to this
dump they call Croydon.
