Well, in light of the summer i have experienced, i think it only fair to
share it with all other spice girls fans. Just to let u know, i never ever
ever in my wildest dreams expected anything like this to ever happen.(no,
i didn't exactly meet her, but u'll find out about that in due time)
The summer got off to a pretty crap start because i hadn't scored tickets
to see them at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre; they sold out in either 12
or 32 minutes, i can't remember...i was very traumatized, you see. :o(
But then just as i had given up all hope of ever seeing my idol, melanie
"God" chisholm, i heard on the radio that tickets were still available for
the July 4 Darrien Lakes, NY gig. So, naturally, i called ASAP and scored
my self a seat on the bus and a lawn ticket to the show. Much jumping
around and squeeling ensued. Composure regained, i went to ask my parents
if i could go. not that it would make a difference...i'd go anywhere and
do anything for them (slightly obsessive? maybe. i like to call myself
blindly devoted). Anyway, off i went to pick up my bus pass, concert pass
and ticket...$125.00 canadian, not bad, eh! and to think, i was ready to
dish out $300 for lawn seats in toronto! i was going to America to see them!
Concert day. Woke up at 4:30 am just to make sure i wouldn't sleep in.
Giggled to myself in disbelief of what was going to happen that evening
until 7:30am, the proper wake up time. The bus was to pick us up from a
local shopping mall at 2pm, and the concert would start at 7pm. 5 hrs,
plenty of time...enough even to take in a few rides before the show. 2pm.
Bus arrives, i'm first there. Kiss my mum and sister goodbye and board the
"Bus o' Spice". "Who Do You Think You Are", my very favourite song, blasting
on my discman. 2:30pm. We're all waiting for 2 competition winners to arrive.
3:00pm. Still Waiting. 3:15pm. Get word they've gone down on their own.
3:30pm. Bus pulls out of parking lot...WE'RE ON OUR WAY!!!!!
Traffic on the way into the states was diabolical. I was nervous cos it was
pouring buckets and we may be late. We finally get to Corfu, New York an
hour before the show, and into the park 45 minutes before the show was
SUPPOSED to start.
Just a note to all future concert goers: LAWN SEATS SUCK! Calling them seats
is awfully misleading. 2 Tornado watches were in effect and i was standing
in 3 inches of mud. not that i'm complaing; sloppy muddy sockes are my
favourite. and besides, it was all in the name of Spice. The show started
half an hour late...as soon as Mel C uttered the words, "Eh, we're gonna make
this rrrain stop, right!" the rain stopped. This is just further proof that
she is infact God.
Brilliant show followed. I stood in awe for the first 30 seconds of "If You
Can't Dance", and then totally got into it. Took loads of pictures, most of
which turned out very well. I was completely impressed; it was way way way
better then i had ever expceted.
Fast forward 1 week. July 11, 1998. Spice Girls performing at the sold out
Molson Amphitheatre, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (my home town, if u haven't
yet caught on). A friend of mine, Ryan, had devised a way to get into the
SOLD OUT show for only $10. A bit risky, but lo and behold, IT WORKED!!!
We were in!!! Spice Girls! Second show! Oh yeah, baby! Life is good!!! We
nearly got caught at the gate, but we walked fast, and dashed straight for
the souvenir stand. i got meself another t-shirt. (i had bought one the
week before as well). We then made our way to the 300 level seats...pretty
good seats, but for Ryan, just not good enough. So when the usher wasn't
looking we made our way down to the 100 Level. We moved 5 times before
finally settling in next to Honest Ed Mervish (a big Toronto mogul) and his
wife. Nice people, they are. 13 ROWS BACK FROM THE STAGE!!! DEAD CENTRE!!!
Completely nervous, i sat with my union jack flag and liverpool shirt hoping
and praying that we'd be okay for the show, and that we wouldn't be kicked out.
The show started and up i went...JUMPING LIKE A COMPLETE LUNATIC. I'm
convinced Mel saw me. Brilliant show, even better than the first. On our
way out, we saw their tour bus pull out of the parking lot. Nice bus, that.
I got home at around 1:30am, but couldn't get to sleep till 2.
Next day. July 12, 1998. MuchMusic, Intimate & Interactive with the Spice
Girls. For those unfamiliar with MuchMusic, it's Canada's version of MTV,
but way way way better...it's right on one of the most crowded streets in
all of toronto, and has glass windows so u can look right into the studio.
An I & I is when big artists come into the studio and perform, and answer
audience questions. I got there at 6am. the show was to start at 4pm. I
had a pretty good spot for most of the day, but as it got more crowded i
somehow ended up in the back; i'm quite small, u see. Anyway, the show
started, and it was pure mayhem. They came outside for the first time and
the crush of people was insane. I got some lovely bruised ribs, a crushed
pinky toe, and a picture of Melanie C's right shoe.
I got my picture, which i thought would've been of her entire body, so i
was a happy girl. I made my way out of the crowd and was interviewed by
Andrea Kay of CFTO News. WHOA!!! I sat in the parking lot to watch the
remainder of the show...i did come back out to the street when they
performed Viva Forever, and held my sign up which said "Spice Girls
Forever" (that's what they sang in the re-done version for the concert).
My sign was also on tv. After the show, I went back to the parking lot
and got a pic of thier lovely tour bus, and caught a glimpse of the lovely
David Beckham. Although he does not compare to the lovelier Michael Owen,
my future husband. But that's a different story all together, isn't it.
All said and done, it was a wicked day...i got on the evening news, where
far too many people saw me, and i was 10 feet away from the spice girls;
close enough to get a whiff of someone's perfume!!!!
What a summer, eh! GOD BLESS SPICE GIRLS, AND MOST OF ALL, ALL HAIL QUEEN
MELANIE JAYNE CHISHOLM!
